2023

Jordan River Village is Israel’s only overnight medically-safe camp designed to serve children confronting serious illness or disability.

Located in the lower Galilee region, Jordan River Village offers more than just your typical overnight camp experience. Our primary goal is to create a nurturing environment where children can flourish, regardless of the obstacles they face. Since launching our year-round camp in 2012, JRV has dedicatedly served over 30,000 children. Annually, we service 8,000 children and 700 family members. We extend this opportunity to every child, irrespective of socio-economic status, ethnicity, religion, or nationality, completely free of charge.
Since Oct 7th JRV has shown that no matter how severe the problem, or how complex the trauma impacting the children of Israel, JRV is there for them, responding with resilience building care and nurturing fun in a medically and psychologically safe environment.

The AFJRV board, like Jews all over the world, watched on October 7 with horror the unimaginable and unprecedented inhumane acts of terror inflicted by Hamas on the Israeli people. Before the full immensity of what had occurred could even be processed, the AFJRV board sprang into action pivoting its focus towards providing immediate financial and assistance to the Village in its vital efforts to aid displaced persons, war traumatized families and, eventually, hostages and their loved ones.

Dear Friends:

Having recently celebrated the tenth anniversary of Jordan River Village, during 2023 AFJRV experienced a year of unparalleled change. Under the leadership of its new Executive Director Etai Freedman, and with the addition of several new board members, AFJRV entered the new year with increased focus and energy. We embarked on new endeavors to raise funds and promote cooperation with Village leadership and to ensure AFJRV’s ability to serve as an engine driving the Village’s success during its second decade and beyond.

With those programs well underway, the AFJRV board, like Jews all over the world, watched on October 7 with horror the unimaginable and unprecedented inhumane acts of terror inflicted by Hamas on the Israeli people.  Before the full immensity of what had occurred could even be processed, the AFJRV board sprung into action pivoting its focus towards providing immediate financial aid and assistance to the Village in its vital efforts to aid displaced persons, war-traumatized families and, eventually, hostages and their loved ones.

As 2023 progressed, financial contributions made by AFJRV’s board members were sufficient to cover all of AFJRV’s operating expenses, ensuring that every dollar donated by you, AFJRV’s benefactors, went directly to fund the urgent work underway at the Village.  In fact, AFJRV, with your help and with great alacrity, was able to raise the necessary funds to enable the Village to open a new school for children with special needs who were forced to evacuate their homes due to the war. The new school provided four classes to approximately 52 boys and girls, ages 3-16, who previously had been left without an appropriate educational framework. With the school firmly established, the Village was once again able, due in part to AFJRV’s financial assistance, to shift focus—this time at the urgent request of the Israeli Government—towards opening its facilities to the returning hostages and their families and to the families of those hostages still held in captivity.

During the fall of 2023, AFJRV was also there to provide psychological support and comfort to the Village’s officers and staff, many of whom continued to serve the Village’s patrons while themselves silently suffering the traumas of having lost family members and friends on October 7 or having loved ones being held in captivity or serving in harm’s way while in the armed forces.

Inspired by the resilience the Village and Israeli people showed during these most trying of times and with hope that the war against Hamas will soon be brought to a successful conclusion, we are once again looking to the future, with a goal of enabling the Village to reach more and more children each year so that eventually the Village experience will be available to every Israeli child in need. With the vision and energy of our new leadership, new board members and an appreciation for the Village’s unique expertise, we are, in 2024, embarking on this extremely important mission. We are confident that with your continued assistance we will be able to help the Village open its arms ever wider until the day that the Jordan River Village experience will be available to every Israeli child in need of its services.

Warmly,

The AFJRV Board

During 2023, Jordan River Village (JRV) experienced a transformative journey with two distinct phases: pre- and post-October 7.
Before the war JRV reached notable achievements, including hosting sessions for children with serious medical conditions, expanding outreach programs, and fostering new partnerships, particularly with children’s hospitals. However, the landscape underwent a significant shift after October 7, leading JRV to swiftly adapt and provide crucial support to families affected by the war. This involved establishing a school for war-displaced children with special needs, hosting 150 displaced families, and organizing weekend retreats for returned hostages and their families, as well as families of hostages who have yet to be released.

Pre-October 7

The Village served thousands of children and families in need through five specialized programs:

Hospital Outreach Program:

children served through 11 partnership with children’s hospitals

JRV’s VOLUNTEERS ARE THE BEST MEDICINE HERE

Immersive Weeklong Sessions:

children facing serious illness and chronic disease through 11 weeklong sessions

I’ve done here things I’ve never thought possible. I’m so sad to leave

Family Weekend Retreats:

children facing life-threatening illness or severe disability

parents and siblings

You’ve made our dreams come true and we will never forget these moments

Special education school year sessions:

children with special needs

special educators and supportive staff

I think this is the first time I’ve seen my friends this happy

It takes a Village:

camp counselors

doctors

nurses

mental health professionals

additional volunteers

The experience here giveS me the energy to do this work

War-Response Efforts Post-October 7

After October 7, Jordan River Village immediately suspended all planned programming, swiftly pivoting to provide essential support to displaced families of children with serious illnesses and special needs. Among the services provided:

A thank you from the father of Elyakim Libman, 23, who was taken hostage on October 7

We want to express our heartfelt gratitude to everyone at Jordan River Village for the incredibly meaningful healing experience we had this past weekend. Your support meant the world to all the grandchildren, children, and the entire family. Being the family of a hostage in Gaza is challenging, and your profound love, from the CEO to the entire team, including Betty, the head of the kitchen, the kitchen staff, the maintenance team, and Supervisor Avi, was truly a healing experience. It is exactly what we needed.

A special thank you to your gap year kids who made the session extraordinary. Whether they were year-of-service volunteers, national service volunteers, or alumni volunteers, each member of this group exemplified the best of Israeli society—truly exceptional individuals. We were mostly with Rafaeli, but the entire team is fantastic, a caring and dedicated group deserving of immense credit.

The Jordan River team exudes strength. We left with broad smiles, brimming with love, thanks to the embracing hug and care we received from you. You strengthened us immensely—immensely, immensely.

You are all invited, with God’s help, to a celebratory meal upon Elikim’s safe return, and with God’s help, may the state of Israel triumph, bringing all hostages and soldiers home safely.

Thank you very much on behalf of the entire Libman family.

In memory of
Chaim Topol z”l

09/03/2023 – 09/09/1935

In 2023, we bade farewell to our esteemed Board President, the late Chaim Topol z”l, a renowned actor and philanthropist. As one of our founding members, Chaim dedicated his service as the Board Chair from 2012 to 2020 before being elected as Board President. His impactful work, enduring legacy, and cherished memory will forever be woven into the fabric of the Village. May his memory be a blessing.
